A V.I.P.
Fraser Island is nestled off the south eastern coast of Queensland, just
off Hervey Bay and at the very southern end of the Great Barrier Reef.
The scatterings of the reef extend through Break sea Spit, an extension of
Fraser Island that reaches out another 35 kilometers towards Lady Elliot
Island, the most Southern Island on the Great Barrier Reef.
The sheltered waters of
Hervey Bay are protected by the sand island that has formed on the edge of
the continental shelf, protecting the area from the cyclones and strong
seas that the Coral Sea batters the coast with, providing a safe passage
for small ships to pass through. |
Quite larger than most people realise, Fraser Island is 124 kilometers in
length and at it's widest point 23 kilometers across.
The massive
sand dunes that fill the island can reach up to 240 meters in height,
making Fraser Island a wild and rugged wilderness to tame.
Scattered throughout the island is a mixture of diverse eco systems from
wetlands and swamps to beaches, sandblows and
magnificent freshwater lakes that support an assorted variety of plant
life and native wildlife such as the wild dingo, fresh water turtles,
hundreds of species of birds as well as lizards and insects to just name a
few. |

Fraser Island is known for the stunning fresh
water lakes and streams that weave throughout the island.
Thousands
of liters of fresh water flow through the island each year, filtered
through the sand for hundreds of years to emerge at locations such as Eli
Creek, as pure, fresh water that is clean enough for drinking.
Huge volumes of water collect in the fresh water lakes as well, most of
which are perched lakes sitting above sea level. |
Even though these lakes are on pure sand, leaf litter and other sediments
have collected over the years forming a sealed clay-like base that is
impervious to water. |
The most popular Lake on Fraser Island is Lake McKenzie, visited by
thousands of people each year who want to swim in it's rejuvenating waters
and run their hands through the pure white silica sand that lays at it's
shore.
Lake Wabby is also a unique lake, inhabited by the shy fresh water turtles
and numerous fish species, however the lake is in the process of being
consumed by the huge
sand blow on the
northern side which is continuously shifting from the winds, slowly
swallowing the lake as time passes. |

Cruise along Seventy Five
Mile Beach, known as the highway of the island, and inspect the beautiful
coloured sands of the Pinnacles.
Continue on to the Maheno Shipwreck
which is slowly being consumed by sand and rust, then visit Happy Valley
and the magnificent Champagne Pools where you can have a swim.
Journey to the centre of the island and explore the majestic rainforests
at Pile Valley at Central Station, also take the opportunity to learn
about the island's colourful history from your experienced tour guide. |
